Discipline to Lose Weight
Why is it so difficult to lose pounds and keep them off? For the longest time, people have believed that losing weight is as simple as consuming less calories than you burn off. Even if it makes perfect sense, is it really that easy?
Just to counterbalance the previous "junk" meals I had been enjoying, I planned on just eating fruits and veggies for a few days. Using this strategy almost ensured a reduction in calorie consumption. However, a well-thought-out strategy does not necessarily equate to a simple implementation.
Going to the health food shop, I reasoned, would be pretty risk-free. As a result, I let my guard down when it came to meals that were heavy in fat. When I arrived at the shop, a well-meaning employee selling freshly prepared corned beef and cabbage assaulted my senses. The temptation was too great for me to ignore. And it didn't stop there. Cookie samples battled for my attention after my defenses were penetrated by the lure of delicious, "health oriented" ones.
I'd given in to peer pressure once again, and this time I caved. My usually tenacious resolve appeared to be eroding. And, despite being exhausted, it seemed prudent to continue. For a recovering alcoholic, it's like that first drink.
The fat around my stomach has never been an issue for me, but when my diet goes out of hand, it becomes, and I get self-conscious about it. Whenever possible, I use this period as a chance to detoxify by eating mostly fruits and vegetables for a few days.
This has the added benefit of lowering my calorie intake while also increasing my metabolism. As previously said, I was adhering to a straightforward strategy. So, what exactly went wrong? Was it possible that I lacked self-control? Was it a lack of self-control or something else?
It's clear now that the issue was a lack of planning. I didn't make use of the why's power.Allow me to elaborate. When the going got tough, I just didn't have the motivation to stay focused. I wonder if anybody else has had anything similar happen to them? "Oh, a little won't harm me," I reasoned. It's true that once you start down that path, it's difficult to get back up and go the other way.
What would be the best course of action to take if this were to occur? What exactly do I mean by the power of why? Writing down the reasons why adhering to your plan or accomplishing your objective is essential is a wonderful approach to strengthen your will power while using any technique. It's a lot like amassing a large supply of guns. This time, the weapons are presented in a bulleted list.
The more justifications I had to back up the strategy or objective, the more resources I could have called upon when my front line defenses were being pushed to their limits. I should have been prepared with a litany of reasons why when the well-meaning clerk pounced. My mind should have reacted with my prepared list of reasons why I should not deviate from my plan in response to the clerk being kind and sounded quite reasonable, plus it was a free sample after all.
That never happened as a result of my failure to compile such a list. It doesn't matter what your life goals are; there will always be stumbling blocks and roadblocks in your way. At times like this, having a to-do list comes in handy. Your power is in the list. If you don't have a list, you don't have power.
To keep motivated when things become tough, everyone who plans anything or sets a goal relies on a list. Greater items on the list mean greater results. It's worth it even if you have to carry the list around with you in your pocket. Even though coming up with a list of around 50 reasons is difficult, it may pay off in the long run.
If I had taken out my handy list and read it to the cashier, imagine his astonishment. As a result, the clerk would have been forced to move on to easier prey, or risk having the spear of temptation blunted by my armor. If you don't have a list, you don't have power.
